What type of water purification system do you need? That depends on many factors:

WATER SOFTENERS Water softeners are one of the most common systems that we install. Water softeners remove "hardness minerals" -- calcium and magnesium. When these minerals are present in significant quantities your water is considered hard. Hard water can cause crusty mineral deposits on faucets, in water heater tanks, and inside pipes. Hard water makes showers, tubs, and glass surrounds very difficult to keep clean. Softeners work by a time-tested process called ion exchange. The special media inside the softener tank captures hardness ions, releasing sodium or potassium ions in their place. That's why you need to periodically add salt (sodium chloride or potassium chloride) to the softener's brine tank. The salt solution refreshes the media during system regeneration.
WATER FILTERS Water filters remove contaminants by forcing water through various porous materials. We install two basic types of filters: cartridge-type and automatic regenerating. Cartridge Filters: This type of filter generally serves a whole house and consists of an outside housing and in inner replaceable filter cartridge. The cartridge is discarded when spent. It is our standard operating procedure (in private well systems) to install a cartridge filter in front of any softener or other mechanical system component, to protect the mechanism from particle clogging. A filter housing is also a convenient point to add chlorine during whole-house sterilization operations. Automatic Regeneration Filters: These filters use various media within a pressure tank, usually graded sand or activated carbon. Trapped contaminants are flushed away during an automatic backwashing step. Depending on the quality of incoming water these filters can last for years between re-bedding. Automatic regenerating filters are typically used to remove chlorine and sediment, and may be used in combination with other water treatment equipment.
WATER CONDITIONERS Water conditioning is a broad term describing a variety of contaminant reduction strategies. Conditioners are often used to remove excess iron and/or sulfur. Multi-purpose softeners: Certain water softeners have the ability to remove some iron. By altering the media and controls, and depending on the quality of the source water, we can build multi-purpose systems that remove hardness and high levels of iron and/or sulfur in one step. Air Treatment: Certain levels of sulfur can be removed by natural oxidation, through air injection. Chlorination: Very poor quality source water can be successfully treated, and made very drinkable, using oxidation by chlorine injection. Residual chlorine is removed by passing the water through an automatic carbon filter.
ULTRAVIOLET STERILIZATION Water containing coliform bacteria and other harmful microorganisms can be sterilized by passing the water across a high-intensity ultraviolet (UV) lamp. Source water must be quite clear for this method to be effective. Softening and filtration equipment is often installed ahead of UV equipment.
REVERSE OSMOSIS Reverse osmosis (RO) is a method of ultra-fine filtration, generally used to produce a supply of high-quality drinking water to a dedicated faucet. RO water is also used to feed refrigerator ice makers and whole-house humidifiers. Many bottled water manufacturers use this same technology. With RO you have the ability to tap into a steady supply of bottled-water-quality water all day every day, at very low cost.
